Dimapur, 9 July (MTNews): The Village Guard Association of Nagaland (VGAN) is intensifying its efforts to push the state government to increase their salaries and improve their benefits. In a press conference held on Saturday, the association highlighted the crucial role played by the village guards (VGs) in protecting and upholding the integrity of the country, particularly in the international border areas. However, they expressed their discontent with the meager amount of 3000 rupees per month and a daily allowance of 25 rupees they receive.

With over 9,500 village guards currently serving in the state, the VGAN has consistently made submissions to the concerned authorities over the years, requesting an enhancement of their wages. Despite several assurances, including promises from the Prime Minister of India, no concrete action has been taken so far.

The VGAN emphasized that the low wages are not commensurate with the risks and responsibilities that village guards undertake to safeguard the nation’s borders.

Additionally, the association lamented the lack of a pension scheme, medical facilities, and life insurance coverage for village guards. They appealed to the authorities to address these gaps and provide the necessary support to enhance the overall well-being of VGs and their families.

To discuss the next course of action if their demands are not met, the VGAN announced that its members would convene a meeting on the 14th and 15th of this month in Tuensang.
