Wadi-Piggery launched in Mokokchung District to promote sustainable agriculture and rural development

Mokokchung, 23 June (MTNews): In a significant move towards fostering sustainable agriculture and rural development, Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) Mokokchung under Tribal Development Fund (TDF) in collaboration with NABARD successfully launched the Integration of Wadi and Piggery project today. The project was launched at the KVK Conference Hall for Ongpangkong (S) and Chuchuyimlang Block under Mokokchung District.

During the launch, Tokiho Achumi, Assistant Chief Technical Officer (Agronomy), provided insights into the various activities carried out in the adopted villages of Chuchuyimlang, Yaongyimti Old, Yaongyimti New, and Aliba. Achumi elaborated on the project’s components, which encompass orchard development, piggery development, and the establishment of a pig breeding unit.

Under the orchard development component, participating farmers will receive Sweet Orange variety Malta-sari and Dragon Fruit variety Halley Comet. This initiative aims to enhance fruit production and diversify the agricultural sector in the region. Additionally, the piggery component of the project will provide farmers with two piglets, supporting the growth of piggery farming in the area. Furthermore, a pig breeding unit will be established at the KVK Mokokchung farm, contributing to the overall sustainability and progress of the project.

During her keynote address, Tiakala Ao, General Manager of NABARD Nagaland Regional Office, Dimapur emphasized the significance of collaboration with research institutes like KVK for the successful implementation of development programs. She highlighted the achievements of the Tuensang region, where similar projects had flourished. She mentioned the positive outcomes of four Tribal Development Fund (TDF) projects initiated in partnership with KVK Tuensang since 2008, benefiting over 1,500 farmers and resulting in the establishment of three Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs) through NABARD’s support.

Ao challenged the farmers of Mokokchung to mirror the enthusiasm and dedication displayed by their counterparts in Tuensang. She expressed regret that the project in Mokokchung had only commenced in 2022, with the successful implementation of the Potato Seed Village in Longjang village through collaboration with KVK Mokokchung. Stressing the significance of strong partnerships, Ao emphasized that the program’s success relies on hardworking and sincere farmers supported by reliable collaborators.

Acknowledging NABARD’s three key functions of supervision, business operations, and development, Ao recognized the challenges faced in implementing developmental activities due to limited direct interactions with farmers. However, she reaffirmed NABARD’s commitment to assisting rural communities and promoting sustainable agriculture and rural development, which constitute the organization’s primary mandate.

Dr Sanen Jamir, Veterinary Surgeon and Chief Veterinary Officer (CVO) of Mokokchung, underscored the importance of sincerity and hard work for the project’s successful implementation.

Highlighting the era of geo-tagging, Dr Jamir stressed the need for farmers to be genuine and reliable to ensure the program’s success. He encouraged farmers to approach the project with a spirit of positivity and unity, as these factors are crucial for achieving favorable outcomes.

Amarjit, District Development Officer of NABARD in Mokokchung, echoed Dr Jamir’s sentiments, acknowledging the challenging nature of the task at hand. He urged farmers to work diligently and professionally, emphasizing the importance of collaborating with KVK scientists.

The launch event was attended by ADC Mokokchung Chumlamo Humtsoe, who highlighted the risks associated with the misuse of common salt and weedicides in agricultural practices, emphasizing the detrimental impact on soil and human health. He urged farmers to adopt good agricultural practices to preserve soil health for future generations.

The formal launch was conducted by Tiakala Ao, followed by a vote of thanks delivered by Dr Sarendi Walling, Assistant Chief Technical Officer (Animal Science). Dr Keviletsu Khate, Senior Scientist & Head, chaired the program.

The Wadi project, funded by NABARD’s Tribal Development Program (TDP), aims to promote sustainable livelihoods for tribal communities and enhance their income security. “Wadi” refers to a ‘small orchard’ spanning one or two acres. This five-year project focuses on promoting orchard development among tribal communities, emphasizing small land holdings (1-2 acres), agro-biodiversity, and increased participation of women.
