Wokha: Two women caught peddling drugs; Youth Organizations take drastic action

Two women were apprehended in Tsumang Colony of Wokha town on 16 July for allegedly peddling drugs. The Youth Organization of Tsumang-A and Tsumang –B on Monday organized a procession in response to the incident, highlighting their zero-tolerance policy towards drug abuse. During the procession, the two alleged female peddlers who were accused of trading drugs were reportedly paraded with cardboard hanging from their necks and their hair cut. They were subsequently handed over to the police.

The procession witnessed an impressive turnout with participation from youths, women leaders, and members of the Lotha Eloe Hoho, who had been invited to attend the event. During the silent procession, participants carried placards bearing messages such as “Say No to Drugs” and “Sale of Drugs in Lotha Area is Totally Prohibited,” drawing attention to the issue and emphasizing the need for collective action.

Representatives from the Tsumang ‘A’ and ‘B’ Youth Organization explained that their decision to take such drastic action was not taken lightly. The two women had been habitual offenders who had previously evaded punishment, it was reported. Despite multiple penalties imposed by the police on previous occasions, the offenders reportedly continued their illicit activities, compelling the youth organization to intervene.

In May 2023, the Tsumang colony youth organization passed a resolution that imposed fines and expulsion from the colony for individuals involved in drug peddling. In line with this resolution, the colony’s youths have already expelled seven individuals to date.

The purpose of the silent procession, according to the youth organization, was to raise awareness and emphasize that combating drug abuse is a shared responsibility. By coming together and displaying their determination to fight against drugs, they aimed to eradicate this menace from their society.

Following the procession, a joint representation was submitted to the local police and district administration in Wokha, urging them to address the issue of drug peddling effectively. The incident has sparked a renewed call for stricter enforcement and proactive measures to curb the drug trade in the area.
