A special plantation drive was successfully carried out in Ward-10 of Wokha town on August 20, 2024, under the initiative of Wokha Town Councilor Thungchano Kikon. The event, themed “CHERRY 10 & GO GREEN,” aimed to preserve indigenous plants and raise awareness about environmental sustainability.
The drive focused on the preservation of the indigenous Cherry plant, alongside other native species, and sought to highlight the importance of maintaining a healthy environment. Approximately 1,500 saplings, including wild apples and other indigenous plants, were planted across the six colonies that make up Ward-10.
The event commenced with a formal function at the residence of Chief Medical Officer, Wokha, Dr Zuben Kikon, located in Blue Hill Colony. During the event, Councillor Thungchano Kikon emphasized the critical role trees play in improving air quality by providing oxygen and making the environment safer and healthier. She noted that planting more trees was essential for ensuring a secure and healthy future for the next generation.
The participants, including the Councilor and Colony members, expressed their gratitude to District Forest Ranger, Wokha, Grace Kikon, for her valuable assistance in arranging the saplings for the drive. The plantation effort represented a significant step toward fostering a greener and more sustainable environment in Wokha.
