In response to a relocation notice issued last year by the landowners of the current dumping site, the Mokokchung Municipal Council (MMC) has intensified efforts to mitigate the impact of wet waste on the landfill. The existing dumping site, situated on the outskirts of Mokokchung village, has been a persistent concern due to pollution, foul odors, swarms of flies, and its adverse effects on the surrounding environment.
The issue took center stage during the Mokokchung District Planning & Development Board (DPDB) cum work distribution meeting for the upcoming Republic Day Celebration. The meeting, chaired by Deputy Commissioner and Vice Chairman of Mokokchung DPDB, Thsuvisie Phoji, convened at the Deputy Commissioner’s conference hall in Mokokchung on 16 January 2024.
Speaking with Mokokchung Times, the Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) revealed that since the issuance of the vacate notice, the MMC has been actively seeking an alternative dumping site without success. Consequently, the MMC is now compelled to approach the landowners for an extension.
However, the ADC emphasized the need for thorough preparation before reaching out to the landowners, deeming it embarrassing to do so without proper groundwork. To address the situation, the MMC has resolved to prevent the disposal of kitchen waste and wet waste at the dumping site, implementing bio remediation measures in the interim.
“Only after we do certain homework, we will be in a position to reach out to the landowners and request an extension,” stated the ADC. The vacate notice allows time until September or October 2024 for relocation.
The ADC also highlighted the commitment of all 18 wards and the Ungma Village Council to refrain from sending kitchen waste to the dumping site. However, he acknowledged the challenge of enforcing such resolutions and emphasized the gravity of the waste dumping site issue.
Meanwhile, DC Thsuvisie Phoji projected an engaging calendar year for members, as they will be assigned duties for the forthcoming Parliamentary election alongside their normal official responsibilities. He urged all members to cooperate fully and called on heads of offices yet to submit employee lists to do so promptly.
The DPDB also recommended the registration of the Tuli Area Truck Union to the relevant authorities. The Deputy Commissioner also sought the cooperation of all departments in carrying out their assigned tasks for the successful conduct of the Republic Day celebration.
