The Department of Land Resources, Government of Nagaland, successfully organized the district-level Watershed Yatra at Wameken Village under Mokokchung district on February 15, 2025. The campaign aimed to promote awareness and encourage mass participation in watershed development activities and land conservation initiatives.
The program commenced with a welcome speech delivered by the Chairman of the Wameken Village Council, followed by a keynote address by Sentinungla, District Project Officer (DPO), Land Resources Department, who emphasized the critical need for sustainable environmental practices.
A key highlight of the event was the Land and Water Conservation Pledge, administered by Block Development Officer (BDO) Tuli, Aienla Jamir. In her speech, Jamir addressed the challenges posed by the demands of a rapidly developing world, noting that the rapid depletion of natural resources is leading to significant climatic changes. She stressed the importance of preserving groundwater resources through water harvesting and conserving soil through plantations and tree conservation. She urged the community to adopt these measures to maintain and improve the environment, ensuring sustainability for future generations.
The felicitation of the Watershed Committee by the DPO, LRD, was followed by a brief speech by the Chairman of the Watershed Committee, Wameken. The event also featured a folk song performance by the Merenti Self-Help Group (SHG) and a knowledge-sharing session on watershed management by SDAO Tuli, Temjentoshi, and BDO Tuli, Aienla Jamir.
The morning session concluded with a vote of thanks by Rosang from the Watershed Development Team (WDT), LRD. Post-lunch activities included a quiz competition, Van Activity (AR), and the display and sale of SHG products.
The day ended with Shramdaan activities focused on soil and moisture conservation work near the Watershed Site, led by the Wameken Watershed Committee.
