The community-led observance of World Environment Day in Salangtem Ward was exemplary. The day was marked by the inauguration of a flower garden near the futsal court which was followed by a thematic presentation on solar power attended by stakeholders in the ward’s community hall. Simultaneously, the RRR Centre was functioning with a buzzing crowd while volunteers were seen collecting the plastic waste to be deposited at the MRF (Materials Recovery Facility).

The plot of land where the flower garden is being maintained was allotted by the landowner. The Watsü Unit of Salangtem planted the flowers aided by the Youth Union. Incidentally, old tyres deposited at the RRR Centre by members of the community were upcycled to be installed as flowerbeds. Interestingly, the manure used in the flowerbeds was generated from the household composts by the residents of the ward.

The flower garden, amidst towering trees, is now a go-to place in the town. It was inaugurated by the president of Mokokchung Press Club, Limalenden Longkumer while the dedicatory prayer was pronounced by Shilula Imchen, Associate Pastor, MTBA.

Later, the thematic presentation on solar power was made by Sodangsoba, proprietor of Native Enterprises, Dimapur where he enlightened the members present about the benefits of switching to solar power. Salangtem Ward Yimden, in association with Native Enterprises, also offered ‘Sangwa’ LED bulbs at subsidized rates for the ward’s residents.

This was followed by a citrus tree sapling plantation drive as a follow up to previous years’ efforts. Various groups and residents of the ward participated in the day’s events as well as in the run up to the day. Later in the evening, Salangtem ward also released a documentary on ‘Meri LiFE, Mera Swachh Shehar’ on account of the WED. It was only natural that Salangtem Ward’s RRR Centre was recognized as the best in town by the MMC.

The proactive role played by the Salangtem Ward Yimden under its chairman Lanuakum was evident.
