The Wesean Times has been officially launched as the first-ever news platform entirely managed by students, primarily high schoolers, from the Wesean region. According to Narola Jamir, Assistant Editor of Wesean Times, the platform aims to provide “a unified voice for the youth, fostering a deeper connection to our rich culture and heritage.”
The newspaper, which has been conceived with the vision of uniting the Wesean community, “from the youngest to the eldest, under one voice,” is led by Salindra Chettri, Co-Advisor of the Wesean High School Students Forum, and Chesa Bhutia, Advisor of the Wesean High School Forum. “It’s much more than just ink on paper; it’s a bridge between our past and our future, a call to honor the depth of our culture and the resilience of our people,” they shared about the vision behind the project.
In conjunction with this launch, the platform has also unveiled the ”Vanguards of Wesea” project, designed to spotlight under-30 leaders, prodigies, and changemakers from the region. This initiative will highlight their stories and accomplishments, further reinforcing the importance of young voices. More details about the project can be found on their website: Vanguards of Wesea.
The team is now seeking experienced journalists who can act as mentors and advisors to their budding team, offering guidance as they shape the future of student-driven journalism.
The current Editor-in-Chief, Sneha Singh, a Class 12 student at Garden High School in Kolkata, is originally from Imphal, Manipur. Her leadership, along with the vision of her fellow students, aims to empower the Wesean youth to engage more deeply with their cultural heritage while giving them a platform to voice their perspectives.
As they embark on this exciting new chapter, Wesean Times invites other publications to help amplify the voices of young Weseans.
