The Western Angami Youth Organization (WAYO) organized a public rally today to protest against the physical assault on an elderly man in Kohima, who later succumbed to his injuries. The victim, Kezhalelie Lawrence Miasalhou, who was serving as Political Assistant to the Deputy Commissioner of Kohima, was assaulted on 18 May by two youths following a vehicular traffic-related scuffle.

Protesters marched with banners and placards from Paramedical Junction in Kohima to the Deputy Commissioner’s office to submit a memorandum. During the rally, various organizations delivered speeches condemning the act and demanding justice according to the law.

Reading out the memorandum to the protesters, WAYO emphasized that, according to Naga tradition, it is the duty of elders to reprimand and correct young people for their misdemeanors. WAYO expressed that it is unfathomable and barbaric for young people to respond with brute force to the extent of taking an elder’s life.

The organization demanded that the law enforcement agency immediately arrest the two culprits and book them under all relevant sections of the law, ensuring they receive exemplary punishment. Additionally, WAYO insisted that no bail should be granted to the culprits under any circumstances, warning that any person or group attempting to bail them out would be held responsible for any subsequent consequences.

Various organizations condemn
The Kohima Village Youth Organization (KVYO) condemned the “appalling physical assault” on Lt. Kezhalelie Lawrence Miasalhou and his son Thejavizo B Miasalhou on the evening of 18 May in Kohima.

The KVYO said, “The two perpetrators Mr. Neizosetuo Kire and Mr. Khrietsonyü Whuorie of Kohima village after their despicable act, ruthlessly left Lt.Mr.Kezhalelie Lawrence Miasalhou unconscious which ultimately led to his demise.”

Furthermore, the KVYO assured that it will render its services in any capacity to bring justice to the victim and his family, further appealing the law enforcing agencies to expedite the investigation and book the culprits under appropriate section of law.

Meanwhile, the Angami Women Organization also called out the incident and expressed shock over the inhuman brutality meted to an elderly and respected leader Kezhalelie Lawrence Miasalhou.

The organization urged the competent authority to deliver justice without delay, and said, “That the incident has taken place in broad day light and in the middle of Kohima town has not only shamed the Angamis but has also tarnished the good image of the capital of Nagaland.”

They also appealed everyone concerned to remain calm and refrain from any action that may aggravate the situation.

Earlier, the Angami Students’ Union (ASU) condemned the “barbaric act” that led to Miasalhou’s death, stating that such violence has no place in society. The union singled out two youths, Neizosetuo Kire and Khrietsonyü Whuorie, as allegedly responsible for the “heinous act” that has disturbed the peace of Kohima.

The Nagaland Dobashi Association also said it was “shocked and deeply disturbed over the incident” that claimed the life of Lt. Kezhalelie Lawrence Miasalhou.

“The inhumanly act committed by the two individuals, namely Neizosetuo Kire and Khrietsonyu Whuorie of Kohima Village is deeply distressing for which the Nagaland Dobashi Association condemns the inhuman crime/act committed to a highly respectable and elderly person’s life,” it said.

While appreciating the law enforcement agencies for the arrest of the two individuals, the Nagaland Dobashi Association further urged the investigating agency to take the matter with all seriousness and deliver timely justice.
