The Western Naga Youth Front has appealed to the Director General of Police, the Commissioner of Police Dimapur, the Superintendent of Police Dimapur, and the Chairman of the Ceasefire Monitoring Supervisory Board to take immediate preventive measures in response to what it described as a resurgence of lawlessness in Dimapur.
In a statement issued by its interim convenor Aga Rengma, the organization expressed concern over incidents of intimidation, abduction, and extortion allegedly carried out in public view by individuals claiming affiliation with Naga national groups. The statement said such activities have created an atmosphere of fear among residents and raised questions about how armed individuals are able to move freely despite the presence of law enforcement.
The organization acknowledged the constraints faced by the police and administration, including limited resources and manpower, but maintained that these challenges should not result in acceptance of the prevailing situation. It called for a change in policing strategy, stressing the need for a shift “from reactive to proactive, from response to prevention.”
According to the statement, reliance on complaints filed after crimes occur leaves communities vulnerable and allows perpetrators to evade accountability. It urged authorities to intensify security checks for arms and ammunition, not only in public areas but also in locations where credible information suggests the presence of illegal weapons. The appeal clarified that such measures should focus on preventing armed intimidation rather than harassing law-abiding citizens.
The Western Naga Youth Front also referred to ceasefire ground rules agreed upon with the Government of India, stating that these provisions must be enforced strictly. It said the Ceasefire Monitoring Supervisory Board has a role in monitoring compliance, but emphasized that responsibility for enforcement ultimately rests with state law enforcement agencies. “The ceasefire cannot become a shield behind which criminal activities flourish unchecked,” the statement said.
Calling for coordinated intelligence gathering, visible patrolling in vulnerable areas, and swift action against violations, the organization asserted that no group has the right to threaten civilians regardless of political claims or historical grievances.
The appeal concluded by urging authorities to act decisively to restore public confidence and ensure safety in Dimapur, stating that citizens are seeking the basic assurance of living without fear and expect leadership that prioritizes security and the rule of law.
