The IOC Kiyonger Telongjem in Mokokchung Town has been quietly making a difference for the past 26 years. What started as a prayer cell has now evolved into a vibrant community organization, comprising around 100 families from Aongza Ward, Kichutip Ward, and Yimyu Ward of the IOC fuel station area in Mokokchung. Their unwavering commitment to the welfare of the community has been the driving force behind their numerous activities.

Most recently, the committee of IOC Kiyonger Telongjem organized a career counseling seminar aimed at providing guidance and support to the young individuals of the community in their pursuit of future career paths, emphasizing both academics and entrepreneurship.

Promoting Diverse Career Paths

The seminar, held on Saturday at Kinunger Fellowship, Yimyu ward, witnessed the participation of around 30 youths, ranging from primary scholars to college students. They were privileged to gain valuable insights from various resource persons who were also residents of the area.

Dr Tiasunep, an Assistant Professor in the Department of Anthropology, Nagaland University, initiated the session by providing a general introduction to different degrees and subjects one can pursue to explore various career options. Dr Tiasunep emphasized that the choice of a degree should not restrict individuals from pursuing their desired careers. He encouraged attendees to find a balance between passion, skill, and mastery of their chosen subjects while charting their career paths.

Exploring Technical Education

Rejuba Pongen, an Assistant Professor in the Department of Zoology, Fazl Ali College, shed light on technical education options and the process of entering the field. With the aim of equipping attendees with comprehensive knowledge, Pongen discussed the various technical education paths available and guided them through the application procedures. This session proved crucial in providing students with a broader perspective on technical careers and the opportunities they offer.

Harnessing Math Knowledge for Success

Temjensangba, an Assistant Professor in the Department of Mathematics, Nagaland University, focused on utilizing math knowledge acquired during the high school period. He emphasized the significance of math in competitive exams and highlighted how a solid foundation in mathematics can provide an advantage when pursuing admissions to prestigious programs. Temjensangba’s insights instilled confidence in the students, motivating them to hone their mathematical skills and broaden their educational prospects.

Nurturing Agricultural Entrepreneurship

Dr Lanunochetla, the District Agriculture Officer of Mokokchung, Government of Nagaland, shed light on the world of agricultural entrepreneurship. She emphasized that formal education should not be the sole factor in career choices but encouraged attendees to identify their skills and interests when considering entrepreneurial paths. Dr Lanunochetla inspired the students to overcome financial constraints by emphasizing that entrepreneurship can be initiated with minimal seed money. She advised against burdening oneself with loans and highlighted various business opportunities where individuals can successfully start their own ventures with limited financial resources.

The career counseling seminar played a pivotal role in empowering the youth of the community. By providing valuable insights from knowledgeable resource persons, the seminar broadened students’ horizons and encouraged them to explore diverse career paths.

The emphasis on entrepreneurship and the practical aspects of starting a business instilled a sense of self-reliance and determination in the attendees.

The silver jubilee of the IOC Kiyonger Telongjem which was celebrated in 2022 marked a significant milestone, and the continuation of their efforts through initiatives like the career counseling seminar showcases their unwavering commitment to nurturing the next generation, the organizers said.
