The decision to give among Christians is not primarily driven by financial motives but is deeply rooted in their understanding of God’s nature and their relationship with Him. The essence of giving can be found in John 3:16, which reveals that God’s love is expressed through His act of giving. John 3:16 isn’t simply an evangelical promotional slogan or an effective witnessing tool. It’s a revelation of the heart of God and a summation of the meaning of the Christian life. This verse holds profound meaning for Christians, emphasizing that God is love and that believers should emulate His love by loving one another. Therefore, the concept of giving stems from the fundamental principle that love gives. This, then, is the theological or spiritual basis for Christian giving.

In practical terms, Christians give because they are aware of three undeniable truths that are realized through their faith in Christ. Firstly, they acknowledge that they belong to God. Consequently, believers understand that they no longer possess ownership or control over their own lives or possessions. Everything they have is a gift from the Creator. Moreover, even in a broader sense, God is the ultimate Owner of everything that exists, as stated in Psalm 24:1. Christians are called to be faithful stewards of the abundance bestowed upon them, giving in accordance with God’s will.

Secondly, Christians recognize that they have received abundant blessings from God. Through their faith in Christ, they become heirs of God’s kingdom and all its limitless provisions. The Bible also teaches that with abundant blessings come weighty responsibilities. Luke 12:48 emphasizes that those who have been given much will be required to give much. Consequently, Christians understand that their possessions are not meant solely for personal enjoyment but are to be used for the benefit of others. They are urged to give freely, driven by joy and gratitude for the immense goodness of God.

Third, while Christian giving encompasses various aspects of life, it is essential to highlight the significance of money. Material wealth holds a specific place in biblical teachings. Randy Alcorn of Eternal Perspective Ministries notes that 15 percent of Jesus’ teachings revolve around money and possessions, surpassing His teachings on heaven and hell combined. This emphasis stems from the fact that the God of the Bible values the physical world He created. Creation reflects His glory and displays His attributes.

Therefore, James admonishes believers in James 2:16, stating that providing for the physical needs of others is equally crucial alongside spiritual care. Money, though potentially misused, serves as a powerful tool to fulfill basic material necessities and support others in need.

Understanding these biblical principles of giving is important, but the true joy of giving can only be experienced when these principles are put into practice. It requires a commitment to live out these truths and apply them to daily life. By aligning their hearts with God’s heart of love, Christians can become cheerful givers who reflect the generosity and grace they have received from Him.
