Wokha: Court sentences accused to imprisonment for extortion, mischief, and criminal intimidation

Wokha, 1 July (MTNews): The Court of Judicial Magistrate First Class, Wokha, headed by Julian Sitlhou, NJS, has convicted and sentenced Abenthung Kikon for his involvement in an extortion attempt, mischief, and criminal intimidation. The accused has been ordered to undergo a total of one year of simple impri-sonment for the aforementioned offenses, with the sentences running concurrently.

 

The case against Abenthung Kikon revolved around an incident where he forcefully stopped a taxi passenger, specifically a Sumo vehicle, and demanded a ransom from the driver. The accused went to the extent of damaging the Sumo’s windshield and intentionally causing fear to the victim and the passengers involved. Following a successful investigation by Assistant Sub-Inspector Zubemo Ovung and the prosecution conducted by Assistant Public Prosecutor, Wokha K Renpemo Tungoe, the court found Abenthung Kikon guilty of the charges brought against him.

In her judgment, Magistrate Julian Sitlhou emphasized the prevalence of extortion cases and the need for adequate punishment to instill fear in offenders, discouraging them from repeating such offenses and said that “if the convict is not punished adequately; he shall not have the fear psyche of not repeating such offense.”

 

Abenthung Kikon has been sentenced to one year of simple imprisonment for the attempt to extort under Section 385 IPC (Indian Penal Code), six months for mischief under Section 427 IPC, and an additional six months for criminal intimidation under Section 506 (I) IPC. The sentences will run concurrently. The Court of Judicial Magistrate First Class, Wokha, hopes that this judgment will serve as a deterrent to potential offenders and contribute to the safety and security of society at large.
