Governor of Nagaland Nand Kishore Yadav called for inclusive and people-centred development rooted in Wokha’s cultural heritage during his visit to the district headquarters on Thursday.
Addressing a gathering at the DC’s Conference Hall, Yadav described Wokha as “a land of rich traditions, vibrant communities, fertile landscapes and beautiful natural surroundings”. He said development should be measured not only through infrastructure but also by improved quality of life, social harmony, youth opportunities and preservation of heritage.
The Governor stressed the need to ensure access to education, healthcare, drinking water, electricity, connectivity, digital infrastructure and social security. He highlighted the potential of agriculture, horticulture, tourism, handicrafts and entrepreneurship, urging support for farmers through technology, processing facilities and market linkages.
Youth empowerment featured prominently in his address. Yadav encouraged skill development, innovation and entrepreneurship, saying, “Government employment alone cannot meet the aspirations of our young people.” He urged youth to explore opportunities in agriculture, tourism, technology, sports and creative industries.
Calling cultural preservation equally important, he said, “a society that loses its cultural confidence gradually loses an important part of its identity.” He highlighted Tokhü Emong and urged communities to pass traditional values to younger generations.
Yadav also praised Wokha’s community-led conservation of the Amur Falcon and encouraged responsible eco-tourism. He called for transparent and responsive governance and greater cooperation among administration, traditional institutions, civil society and communities.
Deputy Commissioner K. Mhathung Tsanglao presented an overview of Wokha’s economy, agriculture, education, employment, sports, entrepreneurship, governance and ecological concerns.
The Lotha Hoho sought improved National Highway connectivity, while the Lotha Eloe Hoho called for a multipurpose training hub to preserve handloom traditions and empower women and youth.
Departmental presentations highlighted achievements under agriculture, horticulture and rural development schemes, with beneficiaries sharing experiences of improved production and income.
The Governor was accompanied by MLA Mhonbemo Humtsoe. The programme concluded with the National Song and National Anthem.
