The Englan Yingsung Women Livelihood Thrift and Credit Co-operative Society Ltd, in collaboration with the Wokha District Administration, SANKALP: Hub for Empowerment of Women, the Department of Social Welfare under the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao banner, and the Department of School Education, Wokha, officially launched an Adult Education Campaign on September 7, 2024, in celebration of International Literacy Day. The event took place at the Yikhum Community Hall in Wokha.
The President of the EYWLT & CCS Ltd delivered the keynote and welcome address, emphasizing the critical need for adult education among members of various Self-Help Groups, many of whom are illiterate. She expressed hope that this initiative would enable women in the villages to write their names and signatures with ease.
Dr Wonchano E Enny, DMC of SANKALP: DHEW, provided a brief overview of Mission Shakti. Additionally, representatives from the Education Department, Sakhi One-Stop Centre, and BPM, BMMU Wokha Block, delivered short speeches. The vote of thanks was given by the Chairman of the Yikhum Village Council, who extended special thanks to Deputy Commissioner Wokha, Vineet Kumar, IAS, for sponsoring stationery under BBBP.
He also expressed gratitude to the Education Department for providing study materials and teachers for the campaign. The Chairman noted that the campaign aims to address various issues, such as filling out forms for schemes, signing bank documents, texting, and using smartphones. He also hoped that the campaign would enable villagers to read the Bible and sing hymns proudly in church.
The program was chaired by Y Tumchobeni Kithan, MBK cum VF Longjung VLO Englan. The Adult Education classes are scheduled to be conducted twice a week in the evening at three different locations under the Englan range and will be taught by specific government teachers assigned by the Education Department.
