Wokha, 6 October (MTNews): “Customary laws and practices are not rigid because unwritten laws differ from village to village and clan to clan, leading to conflicts when they are put into written form,” said Dr Libemo Kithan, Associate Professor in the Department of History. The professor said this during his presentation at a one-day workshop organized by the Alumni Association of Mt Tiyi College, Wokha, in collaboration with the Lotha Cultural Resource Centre on 6 October.

Dr Kithan stressed the importance of sensitization programs, campaigns, and public awareness mechanisms to educate the public about the fundamental principles of customary law.

A demonstration on the usage and significance of Lotha cultural attire was presented by Mrs R Zuchopeni Ezong, Former President of Lotha Eloe Hoho.

Thungjamo Odyuo, a Member of the Board of Directors at Lotha Academy, also spoke at length about the importance and significance of the mother tongue. According to him, this issue is a matter of great concern because “our native language is losing importance in today’s society.”

The program was moderated by Alumna Jenny Patton and Alumnus Chumchanthug Ezung. Alumnus N Motsuthung Yanthan invoked God’s presence, and Dr Bweyhungle Khing, the Principal of Mt Tiyi College welcomed the gathering. The keynote address was delivered by Alumnus K Edward Ngullie.

The gathering was enthralled by a folk song performance by college students led by Miss Thunchano Ovung, Assistant Professor in the Department of Sociology. The highlights of the program also included the installation of a new team of Alumni office bearers by Dr Renthungo Patton, Assistant Professor in the Department of Economics. Alumnus M James Tungoe delivered the vote of thanks.

The day-long program concluded with a word of prayer by Dr Medongunuo Ngone, Assistant Professor in the Department of English. Alumna Thungreni Y Tsopoe and Dr Pichano Kikon, the Librarian at MTC, recorded the proceedings of the program.
