World Photography Day observed at Nagaland University

The Department of Journalism and Mass Communication, Nagaland University, observed World Photography Day by organising a photography competition and exhibition at the university’s administrative block on August 19.

Guest speaker Anutosh Deb delivered a presentation on “Past, Present and Future of Photography”, tracing the evolution of photography from early cameras and film to digital cameras and smartphones. He also discussed how technological advances and social media have transformed photography and expanded its influence on society.

Nagaland University Vice-Chancellor Prof. Jagadish Kumar Patnaik highlighted the growing importance of photography as a tool for communication and public opinion. He noted its role in preserving history, documenting society and bringing important stories to the public.

In his welcome address, Assistant Professor Dr Arjun Das spoke on photography as a medium of visual storytelling, emphasising its role in preserving memories, creating awareness and influencing public opinion. He also stressed the need for ethical and responsible photography.

PRO Peter Ki, while declaring the competition winners, cited the famous “Napalm Girl” photograph from the Vietnam War to illustrate photography’s ability to expose suffering and influence public opinion.

The formal programme was followed by an exhibition inaugurated by the Vice-Chancellor. Deans, statutory officers, HoDs, faculty members, administrative officers, students and other guests attended.
