Yakor village in Shamator district has become the first among Yimkhiung villages to be officially declared a drugs and alcohol-free zone, following a resolution adopted by the village council and supported by local stakeholders.

The declaration follows a resolution passed by the Yakor Village Council in January 2026, which endorsed the broader Yimkhiung Youth Organisation (YYO) initiative declaring Yimkhiung land as a “drugs-free zone.”

A community-level program titled “No to Drugs and Alcohol” was held on June 11, 2026, where various stakeholders, including the village council, students’ union, mothers’ union, church bodies and local organizations reaffirmed their commitment to the resolution.

Addressing the program, Advisor of Citizen Union, Apong Janger, expressed appreciation to community organizations for their collective stand against substance abuse and urged citizens to strictly abide by the resolution.

He called on other villages under Yimkhiung land to adopt similar measures and work towards eliminating drugs, alcohol and tobacco from the region.

Earlier, the program was chaired by H Yankiumong, President of Citizen Union. Short speeches were delivered by representatives of Yakor Village Council, Yakor Baptist Church, YLASA Yakor, NVG and YSU. The program concluded with a collective slogan, “No to Drugs and Alcohol.”
