The Yimkhiung Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) have issued a public ultimatum to the NSCN-IM leadership, demanding the immediate termination of Capt. Jangkhen and Sgt. Major Jusulen from national service within 72 hours. The ultimatum warns that failure to comply will result in the Yimkhiung community taking independent action.
This decision was made following an emergency meeting held on August 9, 2024, involving representatives from the Yimkhiung Tribal Council (YTC), Public Forum Pungro Sub-Division (PFPSD), Yimkhiung Youth Organization (YYO), Yimkhiung Akherü Arihako (YAA), Yimkhiung Liberü Arihako (YLA), GBs Union Pungro Sub-Division, Pungro Town GBs, Pungro Area College Students’ Union (PACSU), Pungro Town Students’ Union (PTSU), and all Ward Chairmen and Secretaries of Pungro town. The meeting was convened in response to the brutal assault on two members of the GPRN/NSCN (Kitovi) group by the Town Commander of GPRN/NSCN-IM and his accomplice.
According to the ultimatum, the incident occurred on August 8, 2024, at approximately 8:00 PM in Pungro Town. Mr. Sangtikiu and Mr. Ati, both members of the GPRN/NSCN (Kitovi) group and belonging to the Yimkhiung community, were reportedly assaulted with rifle butts and cane sticks at gunpoint by Capt. Jangkhen and Sgt. Major Jusulen. It added that the assault took place despite the possibility of resolving any differences through peaceful means. When neighbors attempted to intervene upon hearing the commotion, they were also threatened at gunpoint and warned not to disclose the incident, it added.
“Upon learning of the situation, CSO leaders contacted the commander to negotiate, but to the dismay they were met with threats and responded with disregard by the Town Commander,” it continued, adding, “The incident occurred while the public was joyously celebrating the Metümnyo festival, which demonstrates a blatant disrespect to the Yimkhiung Tribal festival”.
The ultimatum further highlighted Capt. Jangkhen’s history of threatening student leaders, individuals, and business establishments, creating social disorder, and undermining efforts to maintain peace and unity in the area. His actions, along with those of Sgt. Major Jusulen, were noted as direct violations of the Eastern Nagaland People’s Organization (ENPO) resolution of December 18, 2007, which opposes bloodshed, threats, intimidation, and violence within the ENPO jurisdiction.
