Mokokchung, October 26 (MTNews): A book titled ‘Colonization of the Commons: Re-Imagining Tribal Earth Ethics’ authored by Dr. M. Zubenthung Humtsoe, faculty at Clark Theological College, was released on Wednesday at Clark Theological College, Aolijen, Mokokchung. Prof. A. Temjen Jamir, Principal of Clark Theological College, dedicated and released the book in the presence of the College’s faculty, staff, and students.
The author, in his book, elucidates that the “colonization of the commons” has always been a strategy of the dominant to amass wealth by destroying the sacred communion between nature and ecological ethnicities.
The dominant doctrines, according to the book, propagate the view that “centralized regulation of commons by governments or corporations is inevitable to protect the commons.”
According to Humtsoe, the book is an attempt to reexamine the human-earth relationship in light of contemporary environmental crises, and to develop a tribal vision of common life marked by ecological integrity and social justice.
The book also emphasizes the impact of the oil spill on the common life of the people and its natural resources, resulting in frustration among the people as a result of the government’s policies of colonizing the commons.
The book discusses a communitarian tribal practice on the preservation, protection, and use of natural resources in the context of an ecological crisis from the perspective of Tribal Earth Ethics.
The researcher’s intention is to promote inclusive participatory strategies that enhance the struggle of the Earth’s voiceless poor for justice and integrity, as well as to illustrate the role of the community in building coalition politics and a sustainable world.
In his foreword to the book Prof. George Zachariah said, ‘this book is an invitation to all of us to become part of this movement of planetary solidarity’.
