The vehicle parking management program was officially launched today at the DC Office Junction in Zunheboto. The event was chaired by Kakishe Zhimo, Councillor and ZTC In-charge of Traffic Regulation, with a keynote address delivered by Keyirangding Hegui, NCS, Additional Deputy Commissioner, and Executive Officer of ZTC.
Hegui highlighted the significant changes that have followed the recent Urban Local Body (ULB) elections in the town. He noted that the new Councillors, empowered by the Nagaland Municipal Act 2023, are focused on bringing positive change. He pointed out the improvements in sanitation and traffic regulation, emphasizing that the vehicle parking initiative is a crucial step in making Zunheboto a more organized and tourist-friendly town.
“This initiative is our first ambassador for the town. Tourists’ first impression is often based on the cleanliness and traffic management of a place. With the support of our Councillors and citizens, we can make a lasting impact,” said Hegui.
He assured the public that the revenue generated from parking taxes would be used for the betterment of the town, with a commitment to transparency and accountability. He also expressed confidence that the people of Zunheboto would embrace the initiative, just as residents of Dimapur and Kohima have done with similar parking schemes.
Hegui acknowledged the contributions of the committee members and Councillors, calling for patience and dedication as the community adjusts to the new system. He emphasized that while some inconvenience may be inevitable, the long-term benefits would outweigh any short-term challenges.
Sukhalu Chishi, SDO Civil, also spoke at the event, stressing the importance of collective effort for the welfare of Zunheboto’s citizens. “We must work not for personal gain, but for the overall benefit of the people. Despite facing criticism, we must remain humble and responsible in carrying out our duties,” he said.
The event culminated with the flagging off of the parking management and tax collection initiative by the Additional Deputy Commissioner, following the powers vested in him by the Nagaland Municipal Act. The parking management system is set to be enforced in line with the Motor Vehicles Act 1988, with full support from the police.
Herato Sukhalu, Chairperson of the Zunheboto Town Council, reiterated the importance of unity in ensuring the success of the initiative. She assured the public that the parking system would be operated with transparency and accountability, and thanked all the officials and Councillors for their tireless efforts in making this initiative a reality.
