Celebrating under the theme “Embracing diversity, shaping the future”, the ten Naga tribes under Tenyimi Students’ Union – Angami, Chakhesang, Rengma, Zeliangrong, Pochury, Mao, Poumai, Maram, Thangal, and Inpui – came together. The event also welcomed representatives from colleges in Mokokchung, including Jubilee Memorial College (JMC), Fazl Ali College (FAC), Mokokchung College of Teachers’ Education (MCTE), Peoples’ College, and Clark Theological College (CTC).

Adhering to the theme of ’embracing diversity’, the event also saw representatives from Eastern Nagaland Students’ Union Mokokchung, Sumi Students’ Union Mokokchung, Lotha Students’ Union Mokokchung, and Ao Kaketshir Mungdang. N Albert Khizho, Advisor of TSUM, highlighted in his keynote address how the Tenyemi Nagas share similar values and traditions, such as a particular male haircut at a certain age, following elders’ advice, unique terrace cultivations in villages, and similar village gates, among others. However, he lamented the ongoing dispute between the Southern Angamis and the Maos and expressed hope for a swift resolution. He also urged for the strengthening of the Tenyimi Peoples’ Organization.

Thuvisie Phoji, DC Mokokchung, acknowledged the journey of TSUM and emphasized that the differences among tribes are merely ‘artificial barriers’, urging the gathering not to compartmentalize. He stressed unity within the Naga tribes, saying, “Even among Tenyemis, we have different cultures, but for unity, we are under one umbrella. Although we have different cultures, languages, and habits, we belong to the same race.” Phoji also urged for unity within the Tenyimi Union and among the Nagas.

Describing it as a ‘historic day’, special guest Advisor Khamo recalled the formation of TSUM 25 years ago under the leadership of Er Kevi. He reminisced about the 1st session of TSUM held on November 29, 1998, at Electrical Rest House, Alichen, Mokokchung. “Tenyimi is a community by blood,” the advisor remarked, adding, “Outside, we may be fighting, but we are still Tenyimis.”

Speaking on peaceful coexistence among diverse tribes, he outlined three fundamental principles: understanding, acceptance, and love. He encouraged youngsters to uphold these principles and to restore cultural values of honesty, hard work, and generosity. Advisor Khamo also reminded the gathering of the rampant corruption. He noted that the buildings, vehicles, and lifestyle of the Nagas all reflect the level of corruption. He therefore challenged the youth to inculcate a culture of honesty and hard work.

Advising the youth to become entrepreneurs rather than just seeking government jobs, Khamo emphasized the importance of changing mindset and combating corruption while leading a life obedient to God. It may be noted that the Advisor is also the Chairman, International Ministry, Chakhesang Mission Society (CMS).
