The 2nd Winter Challenge Badminton Tournament, organised by the Badminton Association Khensa (BAK) under the aegis of the Mokokchung District Badminton Association (MDBA), began on December 18 at the Khensa Village Community Hall.
Additional Deputy Commissioner Mokokchung, Atsüngba Walling, graced the opening programme as the chief guest. In his address, he stressed the importance of patience and discipline, and called for a change in perspective with greater focus on character building through sports.
Imlitemsü, convenor of the organising committee and a member of BAK, said the main objective of the tournament is to encourage physical activity among young people and reduce excessive dependence on mobile phones and technology. He added that the tournament also aims to promote exercise among veterans as part of health-conscious activities in the community.
A total of 75 players are participating in the tournament, which is being played in four categories: Under-13, Under-17, 85+ and 95+.
According to the convenor, the Badminton Association Khensa functions in alignment with the vision of the Mokokchung District Badminton Association and follows all rules and regulations laid down by the MDBA.
Highlighting the achievements of the association, Imlitemsü said BAK has produced two state-level umpires. He added that several players from the association have represented the district, while some have gone on to pursue professional courses in physical education.
He further informed that BAK conducts coaching programs during summer and winter breaks to nurture young talent and promote the sport at the grassroots level.
