The ongoing Mokokchung Inter-ward Football Tournament 2024 is now into the knockout stages as the quarterfinals round will begin on Monday. Artang ward has been the best performer of the tournament so far, winning all three group matches and emerging as Pool A winners. Artang is also the only team in the tournament to have not conceded any goals so far. Alempang scraped through to the next round from Pool A after edging out Yimyu on goal difference. Both Alempang and Yimyu were tied at four points each. Marepkong, despite being the organizing ward of the tournament, had to make an early exit without earning a single point.
In Pool B, Arkong ward emerged as the group winner while Majakong scraped through as second-place winners to make it to the quarterfinals. The champions of the inaugural edition of the tournament made it comfortably after winning both group matches. However, Majakong and Penli both shared a point each from their encounter, while both teams lost to Arkong. That left both teams with a point apiece. Interestingly, both teams were tied on goal difference at -2 each, but it was Majakong that moved on to the next round on a better ‘goals for’ aggregate.
In Pool C, Mongsenbai qualified as group winners with 6 points while Tongdentsuyong qualified as second-place winners with 3 points. Kumlong ward was eliminated after failing to open its account.
Salangtem ward had an unmemorable tournament this year as they were eliminated from the tournament with the unsavory distinction of being the team to have conceded the most number of goals so far in the tournament. They conceded 6 goals against Sangtemla and 11 goals against Sungkomen. Their game against Sungkomen on Saturday was a memorable day for Tarepnungsang as he hammered in 7 goals, perhaps a record that might remain unbroken for a long time. Sungkomen emerged as Group D winners followed by defending champions Sangtemla as second-place winners. Salangtem exited without scoring a single goal in the tournament.
The quarterfinals round will begin on Monday with former champions Artang ward locking horns with neighbors Majakong on the first quarterfinal match on Monday. The second quarterfinal match will be played between Mongsenbai ward and defending champions Sangtemla ward.
On Tuesday, the third quarterfinal match will be played between Arkong ward and Alempang Ward while Sungkomen ward will face off against Tongdentsuyong ward in the fourth quarterfinal match.
