The outgoing chief minister took to Twitter to announce the news of his resignation. Rio said, “As my tenure has come to an end, I submitted letter of resignation as Chief Minister of Nagaland to the Hon’ble Governor, Shri @LaGanesan ji” on Saturday.

However, despite the Rio-led NDPP along with its pre-poll alliance partner BJP securing a clear majority, there was no mention of him staking claim to form the new government in Nagaland.

Rio’s resignation comes a day after winners of the NDPP party held a closed-door meeting at its party headquarters in Kohima and unanimously elected Rio as the leader of the NDPP Legislature Party.

Neiphiu Rio and other leaders of his party are reported to be leaving for Delhi soon to meet the BJP high command. The swearing-in of the new government is likely to take place on 7 March.
