Quilling or paper tacos is an art form that involves the use of strips of paper that are rolled, shaped, and glued together to create decorative designs

Can a tree made of paper strips be any pretty? Perhaps, it’s a little hard for some of us to masticate, but the work of 25-year old, Linuksangla Jamir, of Mongsenyimti village will certainly fascinate you.

Linuksangla Jamir, a post-graduate in commerce and an ardent lover of art, who had always cherished the fact that her hands can create something beautiful, began her quilling business back in 2021 when she first got introduced to it via the internet.

Talking to Mokokchung Times, the artist, Asangla said that she mostly worked with her fingers rather than the quilling tools as she preferred to shape and bend the papers to the sway of her imagination. She has always been inclined to do things with her hands (crafts).

“I love how I could create something beautiful with my own hands. I first spotted quilling, also known as filigree, on the internet. It was a colorful tree made out of paper strips. I tried to replicate it and to my surprise turned out pretty well. That’s how I started paper quilling crafts as a hobby, which gradually turned into a viable business,” she added.

There are quilling tools available to roll and pinch paper into different shapes and designs. But she likes working with her fingers instead, to shape the paper the way she wants. “Paper Quilling is an inexpensive task, but the cost of making a quilling project entail patience, time and energy,” she maintains.

She loves to keep adding to her collection which is packed with sentiments and meanings. She revealed that projects that are customized and specific are beautiful and tend to depict more of an emotional touch.

Talking about quilling as a career, she admitted that most people are unaware of the art, even though it is widely recognized abroad. She was optimistic that it would be better in the long run as a career choice.

Quilling is not a wildly practiced craft in Nagaland and most people are not aware about the art of quilling. Cutting strips of paper and turning them into pieces of art is rejuvenating and people’s attitude towards it has been positive so far.

She urges all to give quilling a try. “You might find it to be creatively satisfying and fun. Art in itself is beautiful and creative,” she said. She remains grateful to all those who have been supporting and appreciating her work.

To all those who have never heard of the art of quilling or seen the beautiful results of an intricate quilling project, she urges them to give it a chance and listen to the stories that every piece of paper attempts to communicate.
