Punglwa, 6 August (MTNews): The Food Safety Administration Dimapur Zone under the establishment of the Chief Medical Officer’s Office Dimapur conducted the ‘Eat Right School’ at Sainik School Punglwa, Peren District, Nagaland on the 5 August 2023, becoming one of the few Eat Right Schools in Nagaland.

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) under the Food Safety & Standards Act, 2006 is expected to ensure availability of safe and wholesome food for the people in India. Therefore, the FSSAI has embarked on a large-scale effort to transform the country’s food system in order to ensure safe, healthy and sustainable food for all Indians through the Eat Right India movement.

 

Eat Right India is aligned to the National Health Policy 2017 with its focus on preventive and promotive healthcare and through flagship programs. Eat Right School is one such initiative under the umbrella of Eat Right India Movement which targets the students and creates awareness through the school.

 

Earlier during the day, the program began with an introductory note from the Vice Principal of Sainik School, Punglwa, Lt. Col. Leena Bajaj. She addressed the cadets saying that apart from academics and sports which are considered as the most important duties at the institution, eating well and sleeping well can make a huge impact in achieving one’s goal and encouraged the students to grab the opportunity to participate and learn.

 

Samuel Zehol, the Designated Officer of Food Safety Administration, Dimapur Zone gave a brief introduction about FSSAI, its various features and hierarchical structure in the State. He also spoke on the importance of food safety in general and challenged the students to inculcate good food safety habits.

 

The FSSAI Empanelled partners Souvik Das from West Bengal and Vinod Kumar from Delhi conducted various activities amongst the students in creating awareness about food safety such as letting the students to identify healthy and unhealthy food items, drawing a healthy diet palate, reading of labels on food products such as ‘best before’ date and FSSAI License number etc, identifying food products and the nutrients they provide, naming parts of body and identifying the vitamins they require and the source of food through which it can be obtained and a short quiz.

 

The students from class VI to X could attend and participate positively. The program ended with a vote of thanks from Senior Master, Kanu Barman. After the program, the kitchen and the mess area of the school were inspected and documentation was done.
