Kohima, 29 August (MTNews): A total of 391 sports persons including 5 coaches were honored as Nagaland celebrated the National Sports Day on Tuesday, 29 August at Indira Gandhi Stadium Hall ‘B’, Kohima.
The recipients of the state award for coaches are the junior state coach for Sepaktakraw Holshe Khrieo, junior state coach for taekwondo Visabiu Peseyie, football coach Mughato Aye, athletics coach C Tongjen Thai and wrestling head coach, Virender Kumar.
Cash prizes were awarded to meritorious athletes for their achievements spanning from 2020 to 2022. The awardees included the winners of the 61st edition of Subroto International Cup Football (Junior Boys U-17), 2nd North East Olympic Games, Taekwondo, Archery, Wrestling, Boxing, Athletics, Weightlifting, and more.
The winners of notable events such as the 23rd, 24th & 25th Sub Junior National Sepaktakraw, 31st Senior National Sepaktakraw Championship, and various other championships were also part of the award ceremony.
The event was chaired by Wezope Kenye, Commissioner & Secretary of Youth Resources & Sports. The vote of thanks was delivered by Kethosituo Sekhose, Director of Youth Resources & Sports.
Addressing the occasion as a special guest, Nagaland Minister for Power & Parliamentary Affairs, KG Kenye lauded the achievements of sportspersons in Nagaland including the accomplishments of athletes like Dr T Ao and Chekrovolu Swuro. He encouraged the present sportspersons to uphold discipline and determination and assured the government’s commitment to support them.
Advisor for Youth Resources & Sports and MLA, S Keoshu Yimkhiung, speaking on the occasion, called for renewed dedication to providing optimal opportunities and facilities for aspiring athletes in Nagaland. He also appreciated the dedication of the medal winners in promoting sports and bringing honor to both the state and the nation.
