Uttam Dey is known for selling street food at the New Market junction, Mokokchung registered under the name ‘N.M.F.F stall’ in between 4:30 and 8:30 every evening except on Sundays. Unknown by many, Uttam grew up in Mokokchung and is a former student of Model Higher Secondary School and a graduate from Fazl Ali College.
Uttam, after his graduation had his fair share of experience in business such as running a converse showroom in Mokokchung and a clothing store in the MMC but both yielded no productive result.
Now 41, Uttam, along with his two workers and his cousin, runs the street-food stall which he started in 2017 after his friend’s suggestion. Till today, he finds it profitable and has no regrets that he made this move.
“The only thing I have to look out for is the rainy days; otherwise, it is much lucrative than the converse business I once ran,” he said while encouraging more youths to give such business a try.
“The work I do really needs a lot of hard work and we barely get to have a private life because we have to cook the entire day and then sell them at night but it is worth it,” he continued.
According to him, Roti with gizzard and liver is one of his popular dishes among the customers.
“I’m glad that our foods get ordered in bulk especially by the CYE and Churches,” he said in satisfaction.
Speaking about his future plans, he said he would love to open his own restaurant or hotel someday to which he added, it would be nice if the MMC can reduce the license fee for stalls like his.
“The trade permit that I have only allots me 3-4 hours to open my stall but the fee charged is as same as those regular hotels and restaurants. So, it’d be nice if the MMC can take a look at it and reduce the fee charge,” he suggested.
