Scammers impersonating Global Naga Forum: Public alert issued

The Global Naga Forum (GNF) has issued an urgent public notice to warn against scammers impersonating its representatives to deceive the public. Reports suggest that these individuals are contacting people under the guise of organizing Zoom meetings on behalf of GNF.

Additionally, there have been numerous reports of WhatsApp accounts, particularly those of well-known individuals, being hacked. The hackers are using these compromised accounts to send messages to friends and family, asking for money under the pretext of an emergency or urgent need.

The GNF has emphasized that it will never contact and request money or invite to a Zoom meeting without proper verification. “Our official communication channels are listed on our website and social media platforms,” it added.

The notice further cautioned against answering video calls or responding to messages from unknown sources. These could be attempts to blackmail, extort, or scam individuals, it added. To safeguard against such scams, GNF has issued the following guidelines:

* Avoid joining video calls from unknown sources.

* Refrain from sharing personal or sensitive information with unfamiliar individuals.

* Verify messages by directly contacting the sender, avoiding WhatsApp calls for verification.

* Be skeptical of financial requests citing emergencies.

* Secure social media accounts by enabling strong passwords and two-factor authentication.

GNF urged victims of scams or recipients of suspicious calls to report incidents immediately to the police.
