After nearly a decade of silence, Mokokchung Festival (M-Fest) is set to make a much-anticipated return this December. First launched in 2006 by the Mokokchung District Art and Culture Council (MDACC), M-Fest quickly became a cherished event, showcasing the district’s rich cultural heritage and artistic talents. Its revival from December 17-19, 2024, at Imkongmeren Sports Complex, marks not just a celebration of Mokokchung but also a significant step towards reclaiming a legacy that had been paused since 2016.

This year, Soundscape Enterprise, under the aegis of MDACC, will take charge of organizing the event. A noteworthy aspect of this edition is the involvement of younger organizers—new faces replacing the older generation who once helmed the festival. This shift is both necessary and encouraging. The world has evolved tremendously over the past decade, and festivals like M-Fest must adapt to remain relevant. Fresh perspectives and modern approaches brought in by the younger generation offer hope for a more professional, innovative, and inclusive event. At the same time, they face the challenge of proving their capability while earning the trust of their predecessors.

While the return of M-Fest is a cause for celebration, sustainability remains a pressing concern. Organizing a festival of this scale requires not only enthusiasm but also strategic planning and financial foresight. For M-Fest to become an annual tradition once again, the organizers must prioritize long-term sustainability. This includes exploring partnerships with local businesses, cultural organizations, and potential sponsors. Leveraging tourism opportunities, attracting visitors from outside the district and state, and promoting local artisans and performers can also contribute to the festival’s economic viability.

Moreover, M-Fest must not lose sight of its purpose—celebrating Mokokchung’s identity and cultural roots while embracing modernity. Beyond entertainment, the festival can serve as a platform to empower local artists, promote entrepreneurship, and build community pride. By creating a blend of tradition and innovation, the festival can resonate with both older and younger generations.
The return of M-Fest is more than just an event; it is an opportunity for Mokokchung to showcase its evolving cultural landscape. With the enthusiasm of youth and the wisdom of experience, this year’s organizers have a unique chance to revive and reimagine M-Fest as a sustainable, vibrant, and enduring celebration. Mokokchung deserves nothing less.
