The Tizu Valley Biodiversity Conservation and Livelihood Network (TVBCLN), Zunheboto has embarked on a pioneering journey by registering five Community Conserved Areas (CCAs) on the global Plan Vivo carbon trading platform. As Nagaland’s first initiative in this domain, the project holds transformative potential for both forest conservation and community development, marking a crucial moment in the state’s environmental and economic journey. However, as with any new concept, it demands thorough deliberation, clearer frameworks, and patience as the outcome unfolds.

Carbon trading, which assigns monetary value to reducing carbon emissions, is a promising mechanism for incentivizing sustainable practices. However, while promising in theory, it is a relatively uncharted territory in regions like Nagaland. For Nagaland, success in this venture could represent a paradigm shift, addressing not only environmental challenges but also the economic marginalization faced by rural communities. If successful, this project could provide long-term benefits, including financial incentives for communities, biodiversity preservation, and a model of sustainable development that aligns with global climate goals.

However, challenges remain. The absence of a standardized framework for measuring carbon sequestration and the lack of a formal policy on CCAs in Nagaland are substantial barriers. These gaps hinder the state from fully leveraging its unique community land ownership structures and rich biodiversity for international carbon markets. It is imperative that the state government acts swiftly to establish policies supporting CCAs and frameworks for carbon credit validation. While TVBCLN’s registration with Plan Vivo is a crucial milestone, the success of the project depends on factors like investor confidence, community participation, the development of reliable measurement systems, and of course the state government’s active support and facilitation.

As the initiative unfolds, its outcome will be closely watched. If successful, it could establish Nagaland as a leader in community-driven conservation and carbon trading, creating a ripple effect across India’s Northeast. This initiative could unlock a range of benefits for Nagaland. Beyond financial gains from carbon trading, the project could enhance the state’s global profile as a hub for biodiversity conservation.

TVBCLN’s efforts are a bold step toward reimagining conservation in Nagaland. The state must now nurture and support this effort because it has the potential to become a transformative success story for Nagaland. By supporting innovative projects like TVBCLN, the state can create a future where economic development goes hand in hand with environmental preservation, setting a precedent for sustainable progress in the state. It may be added that the contribution and leadership of Ivan Zhimomi, CEO of TVBCLN need to be recognized, regardless of the outcome of TVBCLN’s latest initiative.
