NIELIT Deemed University Launched; MoU with Tata Electronics to Boost Semiconductor Skilling in India

Lakshman Prasad Acharya, Governor of Assam; Ashwini Vaishnaw, Union Minister of Railways, Information & Broadcasting, and Electronics & Information Technology; along with Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma, Chief Minister of Assam, today jointly inaugurated the National Institute of Electronics & Information Technology (NIELIT) Deemed to be University at 12 locations, including five in the North Eastern States. NIELIT Deemed to be University, the only university under the Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology (MeitY), was dedicated to the nation during an event held in Guwahati.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was also signed between NIELIT and Tata Electronics Private Limited (TEPL) to collaboratively enhance the semiconductor skilling ecosystem in India. The MoU was signed by Dr. M. M. Tripathi, Director General, NIELIT, and Dr. Randhir Thakur, CEO & MD, Tata Electronics Private Limited (TEPL). This partnership aims to establish skill centers, develop diploma and certification programs, and conduct workshops in Semiconductor ATMP (Assembly, Testing, Marking, and Packaging) technologies. TEPL will provide technical expertise and internship opportunities, while NIELIT will focus on education, training, and outreach. Both organizations will also jointly pursue research and funding initiatives, with a special emphasis on creating opportunities in the Northeastern region of India.

Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, during the event, emphasized the government’s commitment to transforming India into a leading hub for semiconductor manufacturing, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and Industry 4.0. In line with the Prime Minister’s vision, this initiative aims to prepare a skilled workforce that meets the evolving demands of the industry. The inauguration in Kamakhya Devi, a revered city, symbolizes the nexus of tradition and innovation in India’s educational landscape. The university is set to play a crucial role in equipping students with the skills needed to thrive in a rapidly changing technological environment. He added that the North East now represents the “New Engine” driving the country’s development and growth.

Ashwini Vaishnaw also announced the development of a new NIELIT campus in Jagiroad, near Guwahati, which will focus on semiconductor and electronics manufacturing.

Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma, Chief Minister of Assam, reiterated the Prime Minister’s vision of a future where the world relies on semiconductor chips “Made in India” and “Made in Assam.” He emphasized the significant potential for the semiconductor industry to thrive in the region, highlighting the necessity of a skilled workforce to support this growing sector. His remarks underscore the commitment to nurturing local talent, creating job opportunities, and ensuring that Assam plays a pivotal role in the global technology landscape.

The National Institute of Electronics & Information Technology (NIELIT), an autonomous scientific society under MeitY, has been conferred the status of “Deemed to Be University” under the distinct category by the Ministry of Education. With its main campus in Ropar (Punjab) and 11 constituent units across Aizawl, Agartala, Aurangabad, Calicut, Gorakhpur, Imphal, Itanagar, Kekri, Kohima, Patna, and Srinagar, NIELIT Deemed to Be University aims to revolutionize higher education in digital technologies.

The university offers undergraduate, postgraduate, and Ph.D. programs in advanced and emerging fields such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, blockchain technology, Industry 4.0, semiconductor design and manufacturing, automotive electronics, drone technology, cybersecurity and forensics, and bioinformatics. The course curriculum is meticulously designed in collaboration with industry leaders to ensure students acquire skills aligned with market demands, making them job-ready from day one.

Aligned with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, NIELIT Deemed to Be University emphasizes accessibility, flexibility, and industry relevance in education. It provides a flexible, student-centered learning environment through a robust digital ecosystem that includes virtual labs, immersive content, and AI-driven personalized learning solutions. The institution is committed to bridging the digital divide, focusing on Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities, rural areas, and the Northeastern states to ensure quality education reaches even the most remote regions.
