Mokokchung, April 4 (MTNews): Nagaland’s first woman Rajya Sabha MP, S Phangnon Konyak, was sworn in today. Konyak took oath along with five other parliamentarians – Pabitra Margherita from Assam; Rwangwra Nrazary, Assam; Jebi Mather from Kerala; Sandosh Kumar, Kerala and A A Rahim from Kerala.

 

On March 24, Phangnon representing the Bhartiya Janata Party was declared elected ‘uncontested’ for the lone Rajya Sabha seat from Nagaland, following the completion of tenure of KG Kenye.

 

She was clad in traditional Konyak Naga attire as she took the oath in the ongoing second part of the budget session. She joined the BJP in 2017 and was heading the Party’s State Mahila Morcha as the President since 2020. Before S Phangnon Konyak, Rano M Shaiza was the only woman parliamentarian from Nagaland, who was elected to the Lok Sabha in 1977.

 

Legislators from Nagaland including Deputy Chief Minister Y Patton; Minister Jacob Zhimomi; Advisor Mmhonlumo Kikon and Nagaland’s Lok Sabha MP Tokheho Yepthomi accompanied the lone Rajya Sabha member during the swearing-in ceremony.
