A Joint Mega Ex-Servicemen Rally for veterans of the Armed Forces and Assam Rifles from Nagaland and the Karbi Anglong district of Assam was held at Bhagat Stadium, Rangapahar Military Station, Dimapur, on 12th February 2025. Organized by Headquarters Spear Corps, the rally aimed to honor ex-servicemen, Veer Naris, widows, and their families while addressing their welfare needs.

Over 1,300 ex-servicemen participated in the event, including 16 Veer Naris, 4 Veer Matas, and 33 war veterans from the 1962 Indo-China War, the 1971 Indo-Pak War, and the 1999 Kargil War. Senior officials from the Armed Forces, State Government, and Ex-Servicemen Associations were present.

Lieutenant General Abhijit S. Pendharkar, AVSM, YSM, General Officer Commanding (GOC) of Spear Corps, served as the chief guest alongside Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio. The rally commenced with a welcome address by the Station Commander, followed by speeches from the dignitaries.

Lieutenant General Abhijit S. Pendharkar, in his address, acknowledged the sacrifices and contributions of the ex-servicemen and their families, emphasizing the continued role they play in society even after retirement. He reaffirmed the Armed Forces’ commitment to supporting their welfare and encouraged them to take advantage of the various assistance programs. He also highlighted the importance of Sainik School Punglwa in Nagaland and urged ex-servicemen to enroll their children, emphasizing the scholarships available for students.

Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio expressed his deep gratitude to the ex-servicemen and Veer Naris, recognizing their sacrifices and unwavering dedication to the nation. He emphasized that their selfless service has not only safeguarded the country’s security but also inspired future generations. Acknowledging the hardships faced by veterans and their families, he assured them that the State Government remains committed to their welfare.

Highlighting various initiatives, Rio spoke about government schemes designed to support ex-servicemen, including financial aid, health insurance, and pension benefits. He stressed that special provisions have been made for the education of their children, particularly through scholarships and reserved seats in professional courses. He urged veterans to take full advantage of these programs to ensure a secure future for their families.

Rio also commended the Armed Forces and Assam Rifles for providing free recruitment coaching to Naga youth, enhancing their opportunities in the defense services. He encouraged young people to consider a career in the military, emphasizing that serving in the Armed Forces is one of the highest forms of patriotism. He assured the gathering that the State Government would continue to collaborate with the defense forces to provide better career prospects for aspiring soldiers from Nagaland.

Recognizing the challenges faced by Veer Naris and war widows, Rio pledged the government’s unwavering support to address their concerns. He stressed the importance of empowering them through skill development programs and financial assistance, enabling them to lead dignified and independent lives. He reaffirmed the government’s dedication to working closely with the Armed Forces to ensure that ex-servicemen and their families receive the respect, support, and care they deserve. He encouraged them to remain engaged in community-building activities, utilizing their experience and discipline to contribute to society.

The rally featured welfare assistance counters to address pension-related concerns, medical checkups, legal aid, and financial planning support. Special medical devices such as wheelchairs, walking sticks, and hearing aids were distributed to veterans, Veer Naris, and war widows.

Several war veterans, gallantry award recipients, and Veer Naris were honored during the event. The event also featured cultural performances and a military band display.
