There is no constitutional crisis: Manipur BJP MLA dismisses constitutional crisis amid leadership uncertainty

BJP MLA Karam Shyam on Wednesday asserted that there is “no constitutional crisis” in Manipur following the resignation of N Biren Singh as chief minister on February 9, even as concerns grow over the state’s political future.

Speaking to reporters, Shyam expressed confidence that the ongoing leadership crisis would be resolved by the central government in consultation with legislators. “I don’t know about the President’s Rule. I think the problem will be resolved by the Centre with the help of the legislators. I think there is no constitutional crisis in Manipur,” he stated.

Shyam made these remarks after arriving at a hotel in Imphal, where he was scheduled to meet BJP’s Northeast in-charge Sambit Patra. The meeting comes a day after a BJP delegation, led by Patra, met Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla at Raj Bhavan in the wake of Biren Singh’s resignation.

When asked about the expiry of the maximum six-month interval between two consecutive sessions of the state assembly, Shyam responded, “Let’s see what happens.” He also declined to comment on whether the name of a new chief minister would be announced during the day, responding with a laugh.

Meanwhile, political analysts have warned that with no immediate claimant to the chief minister’s post, Manipur could be heading towards a constitutional crisis. Experts suggest that if the leadership vacuum persists, the state may be placed under President’s Rule. (With inputs from PTI)
