Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Saturday asserted that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has ensured unprecedented peace and development across the Northeast, contrasting it with previous governments that, according to him, had failed to foster progress in the region.
Speaking at a function in Aizawl, marking the relocation of an Assam Rifles camp, Shah said the decision to move the paramilitary force outside the city reflected the Centre’s commitment to Mizoram’s development and sensitivity to the concerns of the Mizo people. He emphasized that the BJP-led government was focused on making Mizoram a “safe, peaceful, and beautiful” state, with PM Modi himself monitoring its progress.
Earlier in Assam, Shah inaugurated the Lachit Barphukan Police Academy in Dergaon, stating that the institution would soon become the top police academy in the country. He highlighted that the first phase of the academy has been completed at a cost of Rs 167 crore, with an overall budget of Rs 1,050 crore for all three phases. He also noted that Assam’s police force, which previously had to rely on training facilities in other states, now provides training to personnel from Goa and Manipur.
During his address, Shah paid tribute to Lachit Barphukan, Assam’s legendary warrior, crediting the Modi government for ensuring his story was recognized nationwide. He noted that Barphukan’s biography has been translated into 23 languages and is now available in libraries across the country.
Reiterating the Modi government’s commitment to stability in the region, Shah stated that over 10,000 insurgents have surrendered and joined the mainstream due to multiple peace agreements signed over the past decade. He credited the government’s efforts for bringing an era of progress to Assam and the Northeast, contrasting it with previous regimes, which he alleged had neglected the region.
Shah is on a three-day visit to Assam and Mizoram to oversee development projects and security initiatives.
Assam Rifles vacates land in Aizawl, paving way for development
The Assam Rifles formally vacated land in Mizoram’s capital, Aizawl, today, fulfilling a long-standing demand of the state’s people. Union Home Minister Amit Shah, whose ministry oversees the Assam Rifles, emphasized at the event that the hill city, with its limited usable space, can now utilize the vacated land for developmental purposes.
The Assam Rifles, under the operational control of the Indian Army, has relocated its Aizawl establishment to Zokhawsang, 15 km from the state capital. “Due to limited space, the development of Aizawl has not happened. To develop Aizawl hill town, the shifting of the Assam Rifles establishment was necessary. It is an administrative decision, taken after Prime Minister Narendra Modi showed interest,” Mr. Shah said.
He further highlighted the central government’s commitment to the northeast region, stating, “The BJP-led central government is committed to working for all-round development of the northeast region. Since Independence till 2014, prime ministers have visited only 21 times. But after Narendra Modi became Prime Minister, he visited the northeast 78 times in 10 years. In the last 10 years, central ministers visited states in the northeast region 700 times.”
Shah noted that peace and development have reached many states in the region, which had suffered from insurgency and underdevelopment for decades. He cited the Rs 2,500 crore projects in Mizoram, including the construction of National Highway 502(A) and the four-laning of a road in Aizawl. He also announced that a 164-bed super-specialty research center would be established in Mizoram.
Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma described the event as a significant achievement for the state, pursued by successive governments. He acknowledged the Assam Rifles’ century-long role in providing security and stated that the vacated land would now be utilized for the state’s development and welfare.
The Mizoram government has sought the relocation of the Assam Rifles establishment since 1988, when the then Mizo National Front (MNF) government, led by former Chief Minister Laldenga, first raised the demand following an alleged clash in which the paramilitary force killed 11 civilians. In February 2019, the Union Home Ministry directed the Assam Rifles to shift its complex to Zokhawsang.
According to the agreement, the Assam Rifles will retain its 23 Sector Headquarters (Mizoram Range) on 95.88 acres in Aizawl’s Khatla neighborhood and the 0.85-acre Deputy Inspector General (DIG) residence near the Raj Bhavan at Tuikhuahtlang. (With inputs from agencies)
