The Seyochung Village Students’ Union (SVSU) has reiterated its demand for the upgradation of the Health and Wellness Centre in Seyochung Village to a full-fledged Primary Health Centre (PHC), following an on-site assessment of the current healthcare facilities.
During a recent visit to the Health and Wellness Centre, SVSU members interacted with the medical staff to understand the challenges faced in delivering healthcare to the area. According to the staff, the centre handles an average of one childbirth each month (excluding referrals from other villages) and sees approximately 30 Outpatient Department (OPD) patients daily.
Despite the consistent patient load—ranging between 120 and 160 patients per month, and at times exceeding 250—the centre continues to operate with limited staff, inadequate medical supplies, and insufficient equipment. These shortages, the staff said, have made it difficult to manage the growing workload effectively.
Additionally, the centre faces significant hurdles in conducting Village Health and Nutrition Days (VHNDs) across its catchment area, primarily due to poor road connectivity and long distances between villages.
The staff appreciated the SVSU’s visit and their longstanding support. In response, SVSU President Longtili C Sangtam assured that the Union would continue to extend full cooperation to strengthen local healthcare. He also reaffirmed the Union’s earlier appeal for upgradation, stating, “Healthcare is a right, not a privilege. SVSU reappeals for the upgradation of Seyochung Health Centre to a Primary Health Centre for the welfare of all citizens.”
Sangtam recalled that the Union had raised the demand in a letter to the Health Department on October 1, 2024, followed by a formal representation submitted to the Principal Director, Department of Health and Family Welfare, Kohima, on November 12, 2024.
