Wapangtoshi, Pastor of the Naga Christian Fellowship Chennai and a member of the State-Level Inter-State Migrant (ISM) Workers Advisory Committee, Government of Tamil Nadu, attended the first meeting of 2025 at the Government of Tamil Nadu DMS Campus, Teynampet, Chennai, on 23 July 2025.
The meeting was presided over by SA Raman, IAS, Commissioner of Labour, Government of Tamil Nadu.
It was resolved to enhance the registration of migrant workers in Tamil Nadu to enable them to benefit from all welfare schemes implemented by the Tamil Nadu government, such as free health and medical facilities, children’s education, food rations, affordable stay, and financial assistance during unfortunate situations like deaths and accidents at workplaces.
Wapangtoshi appealed to all people coming to Tamil Nadu for jobs in the unorganized sector—such as construction, catering establishments, factories, hospitality, retail, self-employment, etc.—to register without fail at https://labour.tn.gov.in/ism.
“There are a large number of migrant workers from Northeast India, particularly from Assam, Manipur, Nagaland, Mizoram, Meghalaya, and Tripura, working in various parts of Tamil Nadu’s unorganized sector, many of whom have yet to register,” he said.
Therefore, he said, during emergencies, the burden is often shouldered by community groups and members with great difficulty.
Wapangtoshi also sought support from the respective state governments, civil societies, and interested individuals in the Northeast to connect with them in order to protect and assist migrant workers from the region as they embark for jobs in Tamil Nadu.
