The United Naga Council (UNC) has announced that a trade embargo will be enforced across all Naga areas from midnight on September 8, in protest against the unilateral abrogation of the Free Movement Regime (FMR) and the construction of border fencing “amidst Naga homeland.”
In a statement issued by the Information & Publicity Cell of the UNC, the council said that the Naga people have made their position “loud and clear on record to the Government of India through official memorandum to the authorities followed by series of agitations, demonstrations, public rallies and number of memoranda and press statements to the Government in a democratic approach with all civility, since January 19, 2024 till date.”
The UNC said the government’s “indifferent attitude…demands a stringent agitation to register our rigid stance against the scrapping of FMR & Imposed Border Fencing construction for defending our homeland and identity and the inherent rights over our land.”
The council emphasized that the embargo, announced following the Presidential Council meeting on August 11, 2025, “shall be enforced in all the Naga areas…until further notification.”
Calling on the community, the UNC appealed to “all the Naga people in the present state of Manipur and Naga brethren without borders” for “utmost cooperation and solidarity towards this movement of the Naga conscience for restoring our rights, culture, traditional ties and fight for a dignified future of Naga peoples.” The council also sought “the kind cooperation and understanding from all concerned and the general public of the state.”
