The 5th edition of the Bishop Abraham Memorial Tournament (BAMT) 2025 commenced on Tuesday at St. Joseph’s (Autonomous) College, Jakhama, drawing hundreds of athletes for the three-day volleyball event under the theme “Run with Faith, Rise in Glory.”
The inaugural ceremony was attended by State Information Commissioner and Advisor of the Catholic Association of Nagaland (CAN), Nosazol Charles, as special guest, and Most Rev. Dr. James Thoppil, Bishop of Kohima, as guest of honour.
Charles, in his address, remembered Lt. Bishop Abraham as “a leader loved by the people and deeply committed to youth and lay associations.” He noted that the CAN, founded in 1983, was Bishop Abraham’s brainchild, adding that the NCYM organising the memorial tournament every three years is a fitting tribute. Highlighting the values of sports such as unity, discipline, and camaraderie, Charles said, “the journey and bonding matter as much as winning.” He urged youth to remain steadfast in faith and “persevere in righteousness.”
Rev. Fr. Kokto Kurian, Director of NCYM, paid tribute to Late Rt. Rev. Abraham Alangimattathil, describing his episcopal motto, “A Loving Service to God and Man,” as the guiding principle of his life. He encouraged youth to grow spiritually and morally, stressing that “sports is a school for character.”
Bishop James Thoppil highlighted youth achievements and announced diocesan support for students preparing for the civil service. He encouraged professionalism, healthy competition, and greater Catholic participation in leadership roles.
The tournament features 58 volleyball teams, including priests and nuns. Winners will receive Rs 50,000, runners-up Rs 30,000, and semi-finalists Rs 10,000, along with special awards. A tug-of-war contest has also been introduced.
