Deputy Commissioner of Kohima, B Henok Buchem, NCS, conducted an inspection of the Jotsoma By-Pass Road today to assess its condition for urgent repair and restoration. The visit comes in the wake of recent landslides at Liezocha and Kezanu, which rendered portions of NH-29 unmotorable, making the by-pass road a vital alternative route.

DC Buchem was accompanied by Additional SP (Traffic) Kohima Puzoto Khatso, Revenue Officer Kohima Kevingoto Kulnu, Executive Engineer PWD (R&B) Er. Wabang, SDO Sechü-Zubza Imliakum Sanglir, and other officials, along with representatives from the Jotsoma Youth Organisation (JYO) and Jotsoma Village Council (JVC).
During the inspection, DC Buchem expressed gratitude to the JVC, JYO, NSDMA, Traffic Police, and PWD (R&B) for their cooperation, noting that “disaster knows no day.” He emphasized the urgency of restoring the road and announced that the repair work would be executed directly by the concerned department to ensure quality workmanship. He also highlighted the challenges posed by Kohima’s loose soil and heavy daily traffic of around 400 trucks, underscoring that all repair work must meet the highest standards.
The DC informed that the restoration is funded through the Disaster Management Authority and clarified that the funds are earmarked solely for emergency repairs caused by this monsoon season, with no provision for land compensation.
Additional SP (Traffic) Puzoto Khatso acknowledged the village’s concerns regarding traffic regulation, particularly for heavy vehicles, and assured that stricter enforcement measures would be implemented to ensure smooth traffic flow.
JVC Chairman Rüdolie Nagi emphasized that the road belongs to the public and urged the authorities to construct a proper, long-lasting road. JYO President highlighted that the organisation had already cleared landslide debris and drains in some sections and pledged continued support. He also appealed for future widening of the by-pass and stricter enforcement of traffic advisories.
Both the JVC and JYO reiterated their request for the PWD (R&B) to undertake the restoration work directly rather than through contractors, assuring full support to ensure quality and durability.
