The NSCN/GPRN – YA has expressed “deep shock and anguish at the gruesome and senseless murder of Maj Manwang Leipha Konyak, Naga Army at Tizit, Mon District, by the Angmai-Mulatonu (pro-India faction) on the evening of 23rd January, 2026.”
In an official statement, the group said, “Once again this group has unleashed their atrocity and brutality on the NSCN/GPRN members by spreading their dragnet and quenched their thirst for blood by killing our officer in a well-coordinated conspiracy.” The statement further described the killing as “not a daring move but a cowardly and shameful act,” adding that it “revealed their inhuman nature and cruelty which will not be tolerated under any circumstances.”
The NSCN/GPRN also dismissed any attempts to justify the killing, stating, “No amount of propaganda can justify the killing of an innocent Officer, all for simply being a member of the Yung Aung led NSCN/GPRN.”
According to the statement, “At the time of his murder Late Maj. Manwang was taking leave on health ground after being released from the Indian jail last month. He was mercilessly killed at point-blank by armed assailants led by Brig. Noktha of Angmai group who is also responsible for the gruesome murder of Mr. Haiwang, Central Council Member of NSCN/GPRN in the year 2023 in Tizit.”
The statement added that, “Having no courage to face the NSCN/GPRN on open ground, they have resorted to spreading fear psychosis through secret killings. These anti-people elements in connivance with the Indian agencies are day dreaming that they could suppress the NSCN/GPRN by eliminating our unsuspecting and innocent members.”
The NSCN/GPRN condemned the killing “in the severest term” and declared, “We take this seriously.”

Colonel for his national service.”
The NSCN/GPRN concluded by expressing condolences to the family: “We also convey our deep condolences to his bereaved family members in this hour of grief and sorrow. May the departed soul find eternal peace with our Lord.”
