A civil dispute involving Abel & 6 Others vs Dr Vihuto Asumi & Anr was amicably resolved following a joint consultative meeting of the Sumi Legislators’ Forum, Sumi frontal organisations, and the petitioners held on April 13 at Pahari Lodge, Kohima.

The meeting, convened under the leadership of Minister for Roads & Bridges and Convenor of the Sumi Legislators’ Forum, G Kaito Aye, was aimed at facilitating dialogue and arriving at a mutually acceptable understanding in the interest of the Sumi community.

The program began with an invocation by Rev Dr Kiyeto Sema, followed by a welcome address from the Convenor, who stressed the importance of unity, reconciliation, and collective responsibility in addressing community concerns.
In a keynote address, Hikavi H Kinimi, President of the Sumi Youth Organization, appreciated the collective efforts to bring the parties towards an amicable settlement and reiterated the need to uphold Sumi identity, unity, and institutional integrity.
The business session was moderated by Ino Shiwoto Wotsa, President of Kohima Sumi Hoho. Representatives of Sumi frontal organisations, led by Akukau Hetoho S. Zhimo, shared their views, emphasizing unity and safeguarding institutional integrity.
During the meeting, the petitioners informed the house of their willingness to withdraw the civil suit filed against the President of Sumi Hoho and the Office of Sumi Hoho in the larger interest of the community. Their decision was welcomed as a gesture of reconciliation.
A presentation on the Sumi Hoho Constitution was delivered by Phuleto Yepthomi, outlining constitutional provisions and suggesting possible areas for amendment. This was followed by an address by I Nikheto Zhimo, who reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to its constitutional framework while remaining open to constructive suggestions.
After detailed deliberations, the house adopted two key resolutions:
The petitioners resolved to withdraw the civil suit against the President of Sumi Hoho and its office in the interest of unity and reconciliation; The suggestions submitted will be forwarded to Sumi Hoho for consideration and possible constitutional amendments.
Several legislators, including Picto Shohe, Hekani Jakhalu, Ikuto Zhimomi, Dr Sukhato A Sema, and S Toiho Yeptho, attended the meeting and appreciated the spirit of dialogue and cooperation.
They termed the outcome a positive step towards unity and collective progress within the Sumi community.
The meeting also recorded appreciation for the Sumi Legislators’ Forum, the Sumi Youth Organization, the petitioners, and frontal organisations for facilitating the settlement.
Kaito Aye urged all stakeholders to implement the resolutions in both letter and spirit, reaffirming the Forum’s commitment to peace and unity.
