As part of its ongoing programme on “Sharing of Concept on Living Morung & Traditional Knowledge,” the Department of Art & Culture, Government of Nagaland, organised a one-day workshop on traditional crafts and weaving on April 22 at Konyak Anghjong Football Ground, Vihokhu Village, Niuland.

Participants and resource persons during a one-day workshop on traditional crafts and weaving organised by the Department of Art & Culture, Government of Nagaland, at Konyak Anghjong Football Ground, Vihokhu Village, Niuland on April 22, as part of its “Living Morung & Traditional Knowledge” initiative aimed at documenting and preserving indigenous Naga cultural practices and traditional skills.

The programme aimed to document, promote and transmit indigenous knowledge and craft traditions of Naga communities.

Teisovikuolie Therie, Deputy Director, Art & Culture, spoke on the concept of “Living Morung” and traditional knowledge systems. He said the morung continues to function as a community institution where elders pass on skills in crafts, weaving and cultural practices to the younger generation.

He added that the department is documenting such practices to create a digital repository for future preservation.

  1. Themsin Konyak addressed the gathering on the importance of preserving traditional craftsmanship as part of Naga cultural identity.

The cultural segment featured a folk tale narration by Hamnyei Konyak and a folk dance by Konyak Anghjong Men Cultural Troupe, highlighting the link between orature, performing arts and traditional livelihoods.

During the technical session, K. Pongpu Konyak spoke on materials and design knowledge, assisted by Nyei-e and M. Luyanba, while N. Tahlem Konyak spoke on techniques and production methods, assisted by Y. Wanlem Konyak and Nangnya Konyak. Demonstrations were also held for participants.

Certificates were distributed to participants by Therie.

Around 300 participants from neighbouring villages under Niuland and Chumoukedima districts attended the programme.

The department said such programmes are being conducted across Nagaland in a phased manner to strengthen cultural identity and sustain traditional livelihoods.
