The Sümi Totimi Hoho (STH) has strongly condemned two recent alleged sexual assault cases reported in Nagaland, expressing concern over the nature of the incidents and calling for swift legal action against those found guilty.

In a statement, the STH referred to a case reported by the Office of the Superintendent of Police, Kiphire, on June 18, in which a case was registered against Heluikie Nsanglung Amos, an Armed Branch Constable of DEF Kiphire, for allegedly sexually assaulting and raping an 82-year-old woman in High School Ward, Kiphire.

The organisation said it was deeply disturbed by the allegations, particularly because the accused was a member of a disciplined force entrusted with the responsibility of protecting citizens and upholding the law.

“Any individual vested with public trust must be held to the highest standards of integrity and accountability,” the Hoho stated.

The STH also condemned another reported incident involving a 40-year-old youth leader from Kohima Village who allegedly sexually assaulted a 17-year-old girl while they were engaged in church-related work.

According to the Hoho, the incident has shocked and saddened the community, noting that church youth leaders occupy positions of trust and moral responsibility and are often looked upon as role models by young people.

“Any alleged abuse of such trust is profoundly disappointing and represents a betrayal to the followers,” it said.

Condemning both incidents, the organisation stated that sexual violence has no place in society and cannot be justified under any circumstance. It urged authorities to ensure that the law takes its course and that justice is delivered in a swift and transparent manner.

The Hoho also called on community leaders, churches, civil society organisations and citizens to work together to safeguard the dignity, safety and rights of women and children.
