The Department of Soil and Water Conservation, Mokokchung, has established 35 vermicompost units in Ungma village under the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD)-funded Climate Smart Livelihood Development Programme (CSLDP) 2025-26.

35 vermicompost units established in Ungma under NABARD-backed project

As part of the initiative, the department organised an awareness programme on vermiculture at the District Soil Conservation Office conference hall for selected beneficiaries. The programme aimed to equip farmers with proper vermicompost management techniques before the distribution of high-quality vermi worms to help them begin organic compost production.

Officials highlighted the advantages of vermicompost over traditional farmyard manure and other conventional organic fertilisers, stating that it significantly improves soil fertility, enhances crop productivity and increases the soil’s moisture-retaining capacity.

They encouraged farmers to adopt vermiculture practices as a sustainable and eco-friendly farming method that can contribute to long-term agricultural productivity and soil conservation.

The project forms part of NABARD’s Climate Smart Livelihood Development Programme, which seeks to promote climate-resilient and sustainable livelihood practices through improved natural resource management and environmentally friendly agricultural interventions.
