NH-02 remains cut off; Rs 36 lakh released for relief as restoration efforts continue
The Mokokchung District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) has intensified relief and restoration efforts following widespread damage caused by incessant rainfall and thunderstorms on July 18 and 19, which triggered landslides, flash floods and severe disruption to road, power and communication networks across the district.
According to the DDMA, Tuli sub-division was among the worst affected, with flooding and landslides displacing residents from low-lying areas and disrupting road connectivity, mobile and internet services, drinking water supply and electricity.
The district administration said relief materials have been distributed to affected families, while relief camps have been set up to accommodate displaced residents. Water tankers have also been deployed to supply drinking water and assist in clearing flood debris from inundated houses.
Medical camps have been established, mobile medical units activated and essential medicines dispatched from Mokokchung headquarters. Health workers have also been deployed to monitor the situation and prevent outbreaks of vector-borne diseases.
The DDMA said telecom services have largely been restored and are being closely monitored to ensure stable connectivity.
The administration said the National Highway-02, connecting Mokokchung to Amguri via Tuli, suffered extensive damage due to multiple landslides. Major stretches between Chuchuyimlang and Unger villages, as well as between Tuli and Tzudikong, remain impassable, disrupting interstate connectivity.
With NH-02 cut off, the administration said National Highway-702D, connecting Mokokchung and Mariani, has become the district’s only functional route for the movement of commuters and essential commodities. Restrictions have been imposed on traffic along the highway to ensure it remains accessible for emergency services and supply vehicles.
Road connectivity to Mon and Longleng districts has also been severely affected, with landslides blocking the Changtongya-Longleng, Merangkong-Tamlu and other key routes. Restoration work is underway in coordination with the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL), the Public Works Department and other agencies.
The administration said road access to Salulamang and Yajang C villages has been completely cut off, and efforts are ongoing to restore connectivity.
Power supply has also been affected in several parts of the district, particularly under Chuchuyimlang Administrative Circle, where transmission lines were extensively damaged. The Public Health Engineering Department is simultaneously working to repair damaged water supply pipelines in affected areas, especially in Tuli sub-division.
To strengthen the disaster response, the DDMA has designated all Area Administrative Officers as Incident Commanders in their respective jurisdictions, activated the District Emergency Operation Centre at the Deputy Commissioner’s Office, and initiated measures to ensure the uninterrupted supply of essential commodities.
The DDMA also acknowledged the support of the Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA) and the state government, which has released an initial assistance of Rs 36 lakh under the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF) to support immediate relief and emergency response measures in the district.
