The Nagaland Flatfenders Club, led by president T.J. Longkumer, visited Viswema village under Jakhama Sub-Division on July 25 to document and preserve the village’s history and legacy associated with the Second World War.
The visit focused on honouring the legacy of the Battle of Kohima, gathering accounts from village elders and documenting wartime sites and experiences for future generations.
Longkumer highlighted the importance of adventure tourism and preserving Nagaland’s wartime heritage. He said Viswema played a strategic role during the Battle of Kohima in 1944, serving as a staging ground, troop encampment and defensive position for Japanese forces.
He said historical records indicate that Japanese troops established camps, trenches and bunkers around the village, forcing residents to flee. Following Allied bombardment, more than 600 houses were destroyed on June 14, 1944.
The programme included presentations by the Viswema Village Council and Club members, followed by interactions with village elders and community leaders.
