MMC directs vendors, shopkeepers and traders to follow fixed rates and warns of action for violations
The Mokokchung Municipal Council (MMC) has warned vegetable vendors, shopkeepers and traders against charging prices above the rates fixed by the council, saying prevailing road and transportation difficulties cannot be used to justify arbitrary price increases.
In a press release, the MMC said it had taken note of instances where certain shopkeepers were reportedly charging higher prices than the rates fixed by the council, allegedly taking advantage of difficulties in transporting essential commodities.
The council directed all vegetable vendors and traders operating within Mokokchung town to strictly adhere to the notified rates and prominently display the approved rate list at their respective establishments.
The MMC also warned that shopkeepers found violating the fixed rates or engaging in overcharging would be liable for appropriate action under applicable municipal regulations.
The council has further appealed to the public to remain vigilant and report cases of overcharging or violations of the fixed vegetable rates.
According to the MMC, complaints may be submitted with details such as the name and location of the shop, along with supporting evidence such as photographs or receipts, wherever possible.
The council said the measures were aimed at ensuring fair pricing, transparency and protection of consumers’ interests amid the prevailing circumstances.
